Trained there once and his son was teaching the class. It was organized, laid back and a real workout. Hi son is really good and nice too. To many throws for an old guy like me though and the acrobatics in the start of class kind of awkward. But a good dojo and to be fair the main instructor was not there so it is more of a comment on the place not instruction.

Master Palhares is top notch in terms of knowledge. I had a few private lessons with him, and while expensive, they added insights to my game that I may not have discovered on my own or even with my black belt instructor. He made me feel comfortable and is extremely friendly. My only critique is that Master Palhares seems dominated by the almighty dollar. He kept watch on the clock during our lesson and stopped at the 1 hour mark and let me know it was $2.50/minute from there on. It may be because I am not a regular student.

I've been training with Luiz for several years now. His knowledge and attention to detail are second to none. From the young compeitior to the old guy looking to have a little fun, Luiz has seen it all and can help all types grow in the sport. His top level students are willing and able to help as well and the overall vibe of the gym is very positive but still active and vigorous. I highly recommend Luiz.

When I can't train with Royce, Luiz is my interim professor. Black belt under Rickson Gracie. 30+ years in the game. His students are the most technical in Jacksonville. Also a good friend.

i have had the pleasure over the years of training with many world class blackbelts, and luiz is just something special. he has been my teacher for many years now and i couldnt be more grateful for the continuing gift of jiu jitsu he has given me. if you really respect jiu jitsu and love the tradition and history, luiz is the real deal!

Gotta love Luiz Palhares. He helped me get my purple belt and would teach regular East Coast seminars in the early 2000's. I remember him having an absolutely incredible base. He was impossible to sweep, turnover, takedown, etc. That's what stands out most about his jiu-jitsu, and, to me, it indicates that he's a master of the core fundamentals, the most important part of BJJ. Always loved the training we did, and, looking forward to seeing him again one day.

Master Luiz Palhares is a great instructor/coach and even greater human being. He genuinely cares about each of his students. I'm grateful to have him as my instructor.

It is an incredible honor to train with someone like Luiz Palhares. He is an original Rolls Gracie student and received his blue and purple belt from Rolls. After Rolls passed away, Luiz started training with Rickson Gracie and received his brown and blackbelt from Rickson. His jiu jitsu lineage is simply the best. Luiz is a very patient and thorough instructor. He has helped me with details of my jiu jitsu that simply has amazed me. He actually teached the daily classes at his school and there are very few 7th degree coral belts who teach class daily anywhere in the world. If you have the chance to train with Luiz then do yourself a favor and do it.

Master Luiz is an excellent teacher and I always enjoy class, at least after the warm-up is over. ;) Every class I learn something completely new or pick-up a tiny but crucial detail on a familiar technique or position. If you're in Jacksonville and want to train, come check out the academy. Everyone is friendly and helpful.

Top-notch instruction and coaching from a truly decent man. Luiz has a number of excellent higher ranked belts who are terrific teachers as well, including his son, who participates in the sport at the world class level. The atmosphere is friendly and even among so many talented people the ego level is minimal. On this team, which includes everyone from kids to "middle agers" just about everyone is genuinely concerned with your progress in the sport and as a person. I'm really glad I decided to begin my jiu-jitsu journey a couple of years ago and am very glad I selected Luiz to be my teacher.

I became a member of the Luiz Palhares jiu jitsu family after moving to the Mandarin area of Jacksonville a few months ago. A week into the 30 day trial (a great deal) I knew Jacksonville Gracie Jiu Jitsu was where I wanted began (and end) my jiu jitsu journey. In addition to being a genuinely nice, humble man, Luiz also has a passion for teaching that is not only evident in him, it is also evident in his senior belt holders that continue to spread his teachings. I consider myself very fortunate to be a student under such an experienced and dedicated BJJ master.
