Guga is an awesome instructor, he has a great manner, and really cares about the development of his students. I was lucky to have been able to train with him for the 2 years I lived in Virginia Beach. He has many students who have gone on to open their own sucessful academies. That is a true testament to a great teacher. Thanks Guga.

I've been training with Gustavo for 11yrs now. He is a very good friend and one of the best Instructors on giving details of the technique. He is always showing something new or being able to adjust the technique to fit your game. I sarted as a white belt with Gustavo and he is the only one that I will recieve my Black Belt from.

Gustavo is the most dedicated instructor I have seen on ANY topic. He is always on the mat, teaching and rolling, multiple times a day. In the unlikely event he doesn't attend a class he is probably teaching a seminar somewhere or sharing his knowledge with our military and law enforcement professionals. Gustavo is truly a pleasure to be around, on and off the mat. I have never walked out of class unhappy. Similarly, my tuition is the one bill every month that I am more than happy to pay because the training I get is worth so much more than the cost. Thank you for your dedication Gustavo!!

Gustavo is my instructor and my friend. I have been with him for 11 years and have NOT regretted it for one day. I can call him and talk technique over the phone or just chat. His dedication to the art of Jiu-Jitsu is great. His detail to attention is there also. Team Gustavo Machado forever.......

I have had the priviledge of studying under Gustavo since 1998. His attention to detail and ability to articulate the techniques to his students are, without question, outstanding. If you have competed in or near VA Beach, you most certainly have heard GMBJJ announced over the loudspeaker. Gustavo had made many-a-champion in is tenure as an instructor. Many academies advertise a family type environment. In Gustavo's academy, this is not just a saying. Gustavo is not just an instructor to his students, he is a friend and a family member. To my teammates and myself, he is a friend and an instructor that will go out of his way to care for his students. Dare I say it, there is no better academy in Virginia.

Gustavo Machado is truly dedicated to the development of his students. The overall feel of the school is like that of an extended family. Gustavo has a methodical way of teaching always building on things from class to class. He takes a special interest in his students, understands their capabilities and has the ability to teach and give them more as they are able. I can't imagine training with anyone else.

Gustavo is the most detailed instructor you will meet. He strives for perfection in all of his students. If you are looking for old school Jiu-Jitsu look no further. I have been a student of Gustavo's since 07 and even though I am out of the country for work more than half the year, It is always good to come back to see Guga and how much the Academy has grown. It is a fighting family down there.... See you soon brother!!!!

I've been with Gustavo Machado now for 14 months. I had previously trained in BJJ for 2-1/2 years, and felt stagnated and unmotivated. When I switched schools, and joined Team Machado, I realized I was not only getting a BJJ instructor, but an adopted parent. Gustavo's love of the art is unparalleled. I have grown so much in the past 14 months, I have a hard time remembering training anywhere else. There are few instructors these days, it seems, who know both technique *and* how to accurately teach that technique. Gustavo Machado has mastered both, and, in doing so, has been able to reignite my own passion for practicing Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. He makes it exciting to step on the mats, even through the roughest conditioning classes or after the worst of days. I find myself wishing I had been with him all along!

I've been training in the martial arts since 1983 and have been an instructor and have had many instructors myself. Gustavo is an outstanding instructor. In addition to his highly comprehensive teaching methods, Gustavo maintains a family atmosphere at his academy. You don't just train with Gustavo; you become part of a large family. Gustavo's passion for his art is evident in his teaching, and his dedication to his team makes training with him a pleasure and an honor.

"There is Jiu Jitsu and then there is Good Jiu Jitsu" I am a firm believer in this. Master Machado is an excellent instructor of Great Jiu Jitsu. ANYONE who attends his seminars will see he is very patience in teaching technique to EVERYONE from purple belt belts to white belts. .also for me, I have learned so much from watching his 50 Great Escapes DVD. I watch it over and over and would recommend to anyone starting out or practicing Jiu Jitsu to get this DVD. It will help you understand Jiu Jistu so much. Thanks

Gustavo is a fantastic instructor, a fair boss, and a great friend. His teaching style is flawless in my opinion. In the almost eight years I have worked for him I have not seen anyone take his trial class and say to him that they did not have a good time and/or learn something. His classes are detailed and a great experience overall. Jiu-jitsu really has revolutionized my life. It has been a part of my life since a young age and will continue to be for many years to come. Thank you Gustavo

Having trained in the martial arts from a very young age, in several locations both in the US and abroad, I can say without reservation that Gustavo is one of the best BJJ instructors that I have ever had the joy of training under. Despite being such an exceptional fighter and competitor, his demeanor is friendly, warm, welcoming and full of respect and humility, no matter your background or experience level; something sadly lacking in many academies these days. His ability to clearly communicate detailed BJJ instruction is uncommon and unparalleled. The continued growth and success of his students, both on the mat and off, is the real testimony to his greatness as a teacher. OSSSSS!

I was introduced to Gustavo Machado BJJ almost 6 years ago by a good friend of mine. I became a student and close friend to an incredible instructor that takes great pride in his students as well as his family. He is a humble man with a drive and passion for the sport of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu like no other. Many of us know his dedication and commitment on being the best he can be . I am proud to be part of his academy.

Gustavo is easily one of the greatest instructors I have ever trained under. He has both an expert understanding of his art and a patience and warmness for dealing with beginners like me. I have unfortunately trained under many BJJ and martial arts instructors who neither had Gustavo's expertise or patience and their classes were a nightmare! Unfortunately, I live in Taiwan, and am not able to train with Gustavo on a regular basis. However, whenever I am in Virginia Beach, I always make my way to Gustavo Machado Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. If you have the good fortune of living in the Virginia Beach area, I would highly encourage you to take advantage of your location and study under one of, if not the, greatest BJJ instructor in the world! - Chris Zahar I can't wait to see you again in July, Gustavo!!!

Followed a great recommendation and ended up learning from the best! Gustavo is an amazing instructor! His amazing display of patience and knowledge made it easy for me to start jiu-jitsu and not be deterred. I couldn't wait for my next class and was surprised how fast I was able to adapt what I had learned all week during open mat sessions on Saturdays. Gustavo always makes his presence felt as he walks around to help with your technique and answer questions which leads to an amazing learning enviorment. Jiu jitsu is in my heart, its in my blood. I am forever thankful to him for that!

Gustavo is one of the nicest and highly competitive athletes I've ever trained with. He helped me while I was skating for the Hampton Roads Admirals, teaching me different non-traditional techniques that could be used on the ice. His passion and understanding of what motivates an athlete is something to be desired.

Gustavo is a valuable, detail oriented instructor. His passion for jiu jistu is strong and contagious. I train under Gustavo when I visit my family and I remember that even from the beginning, he never forgot my name. This really impressed me. He never forgets his students even though he has a large number of students and many affiliate schools. He is invested in his students' success and this can be seen through his consistent and passionate encouragement. He always has a portion of class dedicated to live training and during this time, he walks around and coaches the students as they are rolling with each other as he would mat-side at a tournament. He pushes us, tells us what we should be doing and looking for, and calls us warriors. He motivates me to train hard and put my heart into the fight. His enthusiasm, patience, and world renowned jiu jitsu talent is unparalleled. I am so thankful to have had the priveledge to train under Gustavo and I look forward to my next visit to Virginia Beach and his academy.

Gustavo is definately the most technical instructor I have ever trained with and I have had the privilege to train with 5th, 6th, and 7th degree black belts who did not pay as close attention to detail. He has a very likable personality and is seemingly always happy and smiling. His DVDs Great Escapes and Half and Quarter Guard are phenomenal. You won't go wrong training with Master Gustavo. Obrigado meus amigos.

Gustavo gave me the best start anyone could possibly have in jiu jitsu! He teaches every single class with the same passion and attention to detail that goes beyond expectations. From sport jiu jitsu, to street and self defence his classes are another level compared to other gyms. I consider myself lucky to have studied under him and look forward to training with him again down the road.

Gustavo is the best instructor I have ever had the privilege to learn from. I live in Florida and trained under two of his black belts and attended a couple of seminars when Guga makes the trip. His ability to make complex techniques easy to understand and to make fundamental additions to anyone's BJJ game is incredible. I cannot say enough that could express my appreciation and respect for this man.

I recently started training with Gustavo a few months ago after a few training sessions with him in late 2012. He is a fantastic and highly skilled instructor who truly loves the sport and has a passion for passing on his knowledge and skills to others. He is extremely humble and treats everybody like they are part of his family. I have been training various martial arts and fought MMA over the course of the last 16 years and have seen a lot of different instructors. Gustavo is one of the best instructors I've dealt with and is a motivating force to train harder and achieve more. I'm proud to be one of his students and plan to be for a long time to come.

I've trained with other BJJ instuctors in other places and tried out several BJJ schools when moving to Virginia Beach a couple years ago. In my opinion Gustavo Machado is the best I've come across from his breakdown of the techniques during class to being generous with his time after class to answer any questions individually. He is a true example of what it is to live BJJ rather than just train it. He inspires me to be the best I can be on and off the mat. He's a great instructor and even a better person. It's an honor to be one of his students.

After a long break off the mats, I recently came back home to Gustavo and the academy.... Man is it good to be home. It's funny how people take for granted the opportunity to train with Gustavo or even worse, live in a city not more than 10 minutes away and don't take the opportunity to train with him. Gustavo has been a coach for me both on and off the mats and you can see that in all his students who have remained loyal through the years.... Glad to be home Gustavo..... Loyalty is law!

@ James I did work on the same contract as the guys who were killed in Iraq and was subsequently dragged into a lawsuit because of it.... The suit was ultimately dismissed. Sorry dude, but you don't have your facts straight and perhaps you should educate yourself better before jumping on a site that is designed to rate BJJ instructors and start asking ignorant questions..... Best of luck in your search for an instructor.

Whatever helps you sleep at night. But we both know what really happened. You let it turn into a pissing contest because you were under qualified. No maps, no crew served, no rear security, no armored vehicles, short 2 people...need I go on? All for an extra 1.5mil to your company. Just remember Karma's a motherfucker. Rangers Lead The Way *ADMINS* my apologies. Feel free to delete this convo when you get around to it, but someone had to let this fuck stick know that it may have been 10 years, but some of us never forget.

We both know what happened? Really? Were you there? Then why not put your full name out? My company? Last time I looked my name wasn't Erik Prince.... I guess you missed the congressional inquiry that showed I wasn't even working in Baghdad when those guys were sent out on that run (short all the equipment and personnel etc. - by someone else - again do your homework). Fuck stick.... Hmmm, if have to say running your mouth about something you know nothing about on a web forum would definitely fall under that category.. Anyway, thanks to my teammate JZ for bringing this crap to my attention but I have too much respect for my friend and professor Gustavo to deal with lame ass trolling on a web forum. Apologies Gustavo and teammates for this nonsense.... J Out.
