Sean's technical expertise, rolling ability, and talent to convey his instruction is extraordinary. This coupled with his years of BJJ and overall MMA experience make him the ideal instructor. His direct, but yet friendly demeanor keeps all students engaged and as a result, most students have been with him for several years, just like me. If you are looking to learn from a top-notch instructor, Sean is the man!

Sean is my Krav Maga instructor and has been for a year and a half. Last summer I decided to try his BJJ class. I'm hooked. Done! I just can't get enough of it. As a small female I was a little timid to try this sport. Sean is not only an amazing instructor, he is passionate about the sport and takes so much pride in his school and students. He made it very easy for me to get over my fear of being a "girl" in this sport by teaching me techniques that work for me (yes, even against bigger guys!). Our school has become a family and everyone has such a strong desire to practice as well as help their fellow students grow. The level of respect and honor we all have for each other is a direct reflection of Sean Stoopman. OK, time for class...gotta run!

I've trained with Bjj instructors in many states and countries all over the world and Sean is by far the most skillful teacher I have ever met. He teaches every class with the perfect blend of technique and sparring. He plays with you at your level and then leads you up a step, sometimes bounds, further every time. His students prove his ability to teach Bjj with medals but telling you about his aptitude will do you no good, you have to experience it for yourself. www.silverbackacademy.com

Sean’s BJJ class is a great mix of technical rolling, clear instruction, and a fun time. I would’ve never seen myself trying such a different sport, especially fighting guys much bigger than myself, but Sean makes the whole journey accessible while still challenging you to grow every day. His passion for the sport is very contagious, resulting in a tight-knit school of people who really work to help each other improve their game. I couldn’t ask for a better instructor!

Sean has a very well rounded and detailed style of teaching that I haven't found in anyone else I've trained under. The techniques he teaches consider those of other systems that may be used against them. On top of this, he utilizes certain parts of other martial arts that may be useful in certain situations. Very humble and committed to his students, always taking time to answer questions in a very clear and easily understandable manner. I couldn't think of a better instructor to guide me in my path to black belt.

Sean's approach to self defense is pragmatic and effective. He is a skilled fighter and teacher. I have learned more from him in 2 years than I have in my previous 10 years of training under other teachers.

As a 44 year old father of five I had an interest in learning BJJ, but wondered if I was going to be able to participate in such a demanding sport. Sean and the instructors at Silverback Academy quickly put those concerns to rest by building my physical strength and endurance while expanding my understanding of the basic concepts. Nearly two years later I am preparing for my blue belt exam and have confidence Sean has set me up for success. If you have an interest in BJJ but are wondering if you may be over the hill...give Sean a look!
