I have been with Pat for 10 years!!! There is a saying at our gym that Pat has the midas touch and any competitor he works with turns to gold- or even practitioner for that matter. Over the last decade has been dedicated to furthering Team Renzo Gracie Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (or Gracie Jiu Jitsu as he would call it) all over Canada. As his team grows in numbers, they continue to tear up the international scene. I am sure his legacy will continue to grow as well.

Pat has only taught me once and let me just say WOW. You can't really see anyone's characteristics in one meeting, but Pat in my opinion was a nice guy. He helped me with my technique and taught me some awesome submissions. He is for sure one of the best BJJ instructors I think in Canada.Hopefully Pat can come back to the OAMA I train and can an teach more mind blowing ground moves.

When I walked into OAMA 5 years ago and saw the monster known as Pat Cooligan I knew I had found my school. Pat's classes were a treat because not only is his knowledge of bjj staggering, he knows how to help you find what works best for you to make your game tight. Pat is an incredibly dedicated teacher, school owner and citizen. His staff is the same and loyalty is a rare thing these days so the fact that they work so hard for him speaks volumes. The quality of a teacher is reflected in those he teaches and you need to look no further than Oama's teaching staff to see how high Pat's standards and skills are. Although having Pat go knee on belly and baseball choke you is a horrible feeling, I wouldn't want it any other way.

Fantastic. Also, breeds fantastic teachers. Patient, detailed, insightful, funny. He's a credit to Renzo. You'll learn more by accident in his school than anything you could study anywhere else.

I've been training at Sudbury BJJ (affiliate of Pat Cooligan's Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts) for 2.5 years now. In that time, I've had the honour of learning from Pat on multiple occaisions. His knowledge of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is on par with the black belt he earned from Renzo Gracie. The proof is in the results. He has produced some world class competitors from white belt to brown belt. Don't just believe the hype. Experience it!

I've been training in Pat's school for more than four years. Pat has created a very positive learning environment. The organization is focussed on long-term success. There is a huge "team" culture. Whether you are there to compete nationally or internationally, or there to get and stay super fit, you will find a place. Belts and stripes are given out slowly, and they feel well-earned. Pat's loyalty to the Gracies and genuine interest in the success of his students is always there.

I can obviously see I'm not the only one who thinks this: Pat Cooligan is truly an amazing instructor. I had the priviledge of training at his school in Ottawa, Ontario, and for anyone who has never been to the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts (OAMA), you MUST go see this gym and how it is run. I have recently moved across Canada and there is no club I've seen that even comes close to what he has. It is also worth mentioning that he does not keep his professionalism and passion to himself, but ensures it is passed on to everyone in his school, from all the instructors, right down to the newest white belt starting out. I hold degrees in Human Kinetics and Education, and with that perspective I am impressed with how he and his instructors approach training and teaching. I can honestly say that since moving from Ottawa, the two things I miss most are my family, and OAMA. Keep up they great work!

He is an excellent BJJ coach. He is especially good at taking BJJ techniques and series, and explaining them in manner that is easy to understand. He focuses on realism and what is most effective in competition. His style is 100% no-nonsense. His MMA fighters trust him completely, and his BJJ team crushes the provincial scene. You can't argue with results.

He has assembled the best teaching staff in Canada and their BJJ system consistently produces both results in competition, and character in it's students. He is an excellent teacher himself and brings nothing but the best into the academy to give seminars (World Champions etc). Having trained at other academies all over Canada, I can say without question that the Ottawa Academy of Martial Arts is number one.

Being a part of the organization pat worked tirelessly to build has changed and improved my life in ways I would've never thought possible when I signed up. Pat has created a monster of a family and just as big of a following housed in Ottawa Ontario, but known on a national, and even international level. Pat's knowledge of the fight game, martial arts, business, and his community has allowed him to do for his students and his community what some instructors could only wish they could do. From community charity drives, to sending funds to a BJJ school in Jersey that was destroyed by a hurricane. Pat and his school that he has built shows that BJJ and martial arts is about building a community and not just a business for yourself. Thank you Pat Cooligan for not only teaching me brazilian jit jitsu, but for teaching me what it means to help out others in need while developing my own body and mind. Pat and his instructors at the Ottawa Academy of Marital arts have truely open my eyes, and really shown me that it's never too late to become what I might have been.

The club is active competitively, and promotes the BJJ (and other martial art) disciplines that get taught at the school. So he has 3 clubs in the Ottawa area. *shrug* I just consider that really convenient for training. Haters gonna hate.
