The best instuctor that i have ever had the pleasure training with. being an original member of the carlson gracie team. he trully represents mestre carlson gracie with all his heart. hes trained many high level guy not only in canada but internationally, guys like marcus silveira and being the first instructor of ricardo de la riva. Marcus was also an active competitor during the dominating 30 years of the carlson gracie team. he has a vast knowledge with all of his years in the sport. and i can honestly say there hasent been a single question that anyone at our club asks him that he hasnt been able to answer. he also maintains belt standards throughout his club. he makes your work hard for the love of the sport not the belt. but when u do receive that promotion you know that it compares to the best on the world!

He has more black belts and experience in BJJ than all the clubs and teachers combines in BC. In Canada he is the only red and black belt BJJ teacher and has over 30 years of teaching BJJ, grappling and jujitsu. Marcus is heads and tails above anyone else in the city and he was there during the first days at the Carlson Gracie camp as one of the original students. Marcus is one of the best teacher not only in Canada but the world. Marcus' warm-ups are very hard and his classes are better than anyone else I have been to. Some people cannot handle the workouts and the team itself is top notch with many international competitors with results.

I had the pleasure to be taught by Marcus Soares and he is by far the best Brazilian Jiu Jitsu instructor I have ever trained with

Marcus is one of the leading BJJ teachers in the world. With over 30 years of teaching BJJ he is by far the best teacher. He was around during the early days as one of the first Carlson Gracie students in Brazil and was taught by Carlson Gracie himself. How many people can say that. He has a great team and they all do well in competition both locally and internationally. His team destroys in competitions and they donít have nearly as many students as the other clubs

I have had the pleasure of training with Marcus for the past 10 years. I have never trained with anyone that offers the level of detail and understanding of this sport. I owe all of my knowledge of this sport and its philosophies to him. He is truly a great instructor and friend.

Show up to a class and you will find out why he is the "Encyclopedia of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu." training under Marcus has pushed my fighting ability and knowledge to new levels...and he's an all-round cool guy with a great sense of humor :) Truly an honour to be part of the Carlson Gracie Team and receive such world class training!

Marcus has dedicated his life to the Carlson Gracie Team and in Jan. 2012 will be graded to 8th degree BJJ Black Belt. I've been proud to have Master Marcus Soares as my BJJ teacher.

Mestre Soares is the most knowledgable BJJ instructor in Canada, and one of the few active instructors at his level. I used to train under 2 of his black belts in Ontario and when given the opportunity to migrate and continue my training directly with the man himself I jumped at the opportunity. If you live in the Lower Mainland and you care about Jiu Jitsu come learn from Marcus Soares

Having Marcus as our instructor is like going to a seminar every class. His knowledge about BJJ is incredibly vast, and his ability to teach you the finer details is a skill that few others in the world can do. Thanks for everything you do for us Marcus.

"Encyclopedia of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu" is the most apt title you can give Marcus. He has an answer for every position and every situation, and his attention to the small details makes a huge difference when it comes to being successful when trying different techniques.

I received my BB from Professor Marcus this past June. He's a humble barbarian and a true embassador of the art. What an amazing teacher, friend, and person. It was Marcus who introduced me to the powerful relationship between physical conditioning and technique. He's awesome.

He's the best of the best! His teaching skills are as amazing as his BJJ.

I'm not going to be able to say anything that hasn't already been said about Marcus's experience...his credentials speak for themselves. What I will say is that Marcus is truly THE representative of Carlson Gracie jiu jitsu. His dedication to the growth of the Carlson Gracie team is unparalleled. He is what everyone doing bjj today should aspire to be.

18. Submitted by Douglas on Wednesday December 7, 2011 2:45 PM
Marcus is a good friend and instructor. He is a master of his art which not many can claim. He is loyal to his master, the style, and his team. In his classes, you'll be taught things that work. One thing that I'm amazed with is how the Carlson Gracie style he teaches is more than relevant in today's ever changing jiu jitsu world. New strategies and techniques are being developed all the time. World champions are bringing out things that a lot of people haven't seen and using them with great success. Yet if you listen to what Marcus says and what he teaches, you'll have all the tools you need to handle any situation new or old. You will not be let down.

I have had the pleasure of training with Marcus for the past six years and have competed with Marcus in my corner in both Jiujitsu tournaments and Mixed martial arts fights. With Marcus not only being the former head instructor at Carlson's school in Rio De Janeiro, but also one of Carlson's originals in the first group of black belts that Carlson gave out, his knowledge of the sport is extremely extensive. His adaption of Jiujitsu for mixed martial arts is the best you can find, producing star students such as Denis Kang. I highly recommend training with Marcus and we are extremely fortunate to have a jiujitsu instructor of his caliber in Vancouver.

Marcus is an amazing instructor. He is able to teach concepts that are both simple and complex (but always effective) in a way that can be grasped easily by BJJ vetrans and newcomers alike. I learned a lot from training with Marcus in the past, and I would love the opportunity to train with him again in the future.

I train under two of Mestre Soares' black belts and they are fantastic. I attended one three hour training seminar under Marcus at our school, and I could not believe how much I learned. He has mastered skills I could not even imagine on my own, but I could learn them from him.

Marcus is the Master`s Master!!! What is over the top impressive about him is his VAST knowledge of every way of moving possible in BJJ. He is like a Rubic`s Cube of BJJ where he can give exact detailed advice of what to do in any situation from any angle immediately. Our classes first start of with a great workout-I`m the fittest i`ve ever been in 30 yrs(i`m 45). Also Marcus makes you feel welcome and part of a "family" and team and is always inclusive of everybody from beginner to advanced! Training with Marcus is a lifetime experience and one is always leaning regardless of experience. Oh did I mention,he is the top Master(actually beyond that title really) in Canada for sure-Thanks for your dedication to US Marcus-thanks for giving a mid age guy a chance to get his mojo back ;-)

Marcus teaches strong basics. He won't teach you flying guard passes and 69Z guards but he will manage to show you techniques that will open your eyes. He manages to be innovative and keeps things fresh.

If you're in the Vancouver area, this is the person to train with. No one has the knowledge Marcus possesses. An original member of the first generation Carlson Gracie team and is still teaching. If you want the best, Marcus is it. That's it.

Marcus made me feel at home the first time I showed up at his gym. I can't believe how fortunate I am to have access to his BJJ knowledge every time I train. He has more techniques than youtube!

Marcus is the father of BJJ in Canada and I'm proud to be one of his representatives. His techniques are so tight and effective it's scary - and he holds NOTHING BACK. He will show as many techniques in one class as he thinks his students will absorb and in his own words, "You can show others my techniques, I don't mind. I have 5 other techniques that will beat anything you show". Last time I saw him, he was hanging out with the club watching a UFC ppv and then we got him to play the mic on Rock Band afterwards. I can't say enough about him - great instructor and a great friend. Osss!

Having a strong desire to train in the martial arts through out my life, I have trained at different schools over the years in various disciplines. Roughly eight years ago I began my training with professor Marcus Soares of the Carlson Gracie Academy from Brazil. I remember in my earlier days with Marcus, one of his brown belts was completely destroying everyone on the mat with his skills and athleticism. I was inspired at the quality of this fighter and that Marcus was able to produce such a high quality athlete. Back then this student was only one of three brown belts. Denis Kang was the closest to a black belt at the time. My addiction to the sport took over and I have never looked back. No one will train you harder and smarter for the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu than Marcus Soares.
