Experience is truly a great teacher and Tom has a ton of it....and the ears to go with it.

I like Tom's teaching style for a number of reasons. First, Tom adheres to a curriculum enough to provide some degree of structure but he is also flexible enough to follow a different flow as class evolves if an interesting theme starts developing organically. Second, Tom demonstrates a healthy respect for tradition in the gym and always offers a enough street BJJ to counter balance the competition tactics taught. I find this balance interesting, refreshing and difficult to find in other instructors. Finally, Tom is supportive of his student's individual needs, he is encouraging, thoughtful in his teaching, and fun to roll with. What more could a student ask for?

Tom embodies Gracie Jiu Jitsu! He stands by the Self Defense aspect of it. He also is a firece competitor! He is a very detailed instructor. He always comes to teach with a positive attitude and motivates us; to strive to become not only better at Jiu Jitsu, but also to become better people. He follows a curlicum under Pedro Sauer, but is always open to students input. He challenges us to always have a open mind and to see everything. From the warm up to countless times drilling, over and over, the right way, to live sparring. He is always everywhere making sure each student is getting the most out of what's being taught. He takes the time, that a lot of other instructors do not. To answer questions or demonstrate over an over, till a student gets the material. Tom also has been challenged with teaching Jiu Jitsu to the handicapped, he adapted and through his amazing technique an patience. He made possible what seemed impossible to a student that had one leg. That has always wanted to learn Jiu Jitsu. You won't find many instructors out there, that are willing to give you all their time. He lives an breaths Jiu Jitsu! He is Jiu Jitsu! Changing people's lives and making them more confident. I am happy to call him my coach! More importantly, he is my family! The older wiser, brother I never had. Osss!

Tom's teaching style and ability are one of a kind, as is his generosity on and off the mats. He ensures you understand the material whether during a one-on-one session or in a group setting and does not show annoyance or irritation despite the trainee's lack of understanding. His conviction for the art is surpassed only by his technique and skill set. With no ego to get in the way, he brings a level of fun to the sport that still amazes me. Not only is he a skillful and intelligent coach, but he is great fun to train under because only Tom Tegner can choke you out while you have a smile on your face. It is my hope that any person who trains has the luck and fortune to be taught by Tom, or the closest equivalent.

I've known Tom for a couple of years now, and have been training under his tutelage on and off for a few months. After training with other coaches and suffering constant injuries, I find Tom's teaching style to be refreshing, safe, fun, and highly informative. Where some coaches focus on aggressiveness and intensity, Tom shows a particular attention to technical detail and drill. I feel like I get better mentally and physically every time I show up for practice. Highly recommended instructor. If you're ever in Portland, make sure to stop by Life Tactics/Pedro Sauer Gracie Jiu-Jitsu affiliate location on 68th and Foster. www.lifetactics.us

Professor Tom Tegner is an outstanding instructor and mentor. Remaining true to Gracie Jiu-Jitsu, Tom's approach to teaching focuses on technique, self defense, and safety. He's very humble and always stoked to share his knowledge on everything! I'm proud to be part of the Cascadia Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Pedro Sauer Team

I can't recommend Professor Tom Tegner enough. I have the good fortune of training at Cascadia Gracie Jiu-Jitsu Pedro Sauer Team and from the get go I was welcomed as family. Excellent breakdown on techniques with equal emphasis on self-defense and competition. If you are in the Portland, Oregon area, please stop by Alive MMA for some great instruction and fun rolls.
