Shah leads a class that is relaxed, friendly, yet focused, technical and at times challenging. One of his goals when teaching a technique is ensuring that the students are safe and that they will be able to teach that same technique later on. While he has great insights for competitors, his focus is on making all his students potential instructors down the road, which means that his students tend to be very strong technically. Those who want to compete are encouraged to do so, and he will do more competition specific training when people plan to attend tournaments. Besides, he is pretty funny and never takes himself too seriously which brings a positive vibe to the classes, and help students on improving rather than beating their teammates.

Having had the opportunity to train with a variety of BJJ black belts in Canada and internationally, I believe Professor Franco to be one of the best instructors I have ever had the pleasure of learning under. His unique background in karate, BJJ, judo, kickboxing, MMA and other martial arts has given him a keen understanding of self defense and sport-oriented martial arts. He is constantly studying and striving to develop a deeper understanding, as well as new techniques, despite the vast amount of knowledge he has already acquired. Prof. Franco, aside from being an incredibly knowledgeable instructor, is a delight to learn from. He has a great sense of humour and always makes each student feel deserving of his attention. Off the mats, he has developed close relationships with virtually all of his long term students, and as a result, has developed a a small but extremely dedicated and talented following. Inner City MMA is a great place to learn martial arts not only because of Prof. Franco himself, but because of the truly positive and academic environment he has fostered.

I've been training under Professor Shah and Tushara at Inner City Martial Arts for a bit over a year. He has a broad and deep knowledge of BJJ and grappling in general in addition to a very impressive resume in striking and mma training. Moreover, he is a life-long martial artists, interested in the history, culture, and principles, in addition to its direct application. He cares about training sport, self-defense, and personal character. Great vibe from day one. Highly recommend.
